The Final Frontier

Apollo 11 Launch

Vostok 1

Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space, when he launched into orbit on the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961.

Voskhod 2

The first spacewalk was achieved by Soviet cosmonaut Alexey Leonov in 1965 during Voskhod 2.

Apollo Program

Project Apollo, was the third NASA human spaceflight program, which accomplished landing the first humans on the Moon from 1969 to 1972 with Apollos 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17.

Salyut 1

Salyut 1 was the first space station of any kind, launched into low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union on April 19, 1971.

Voyager Program

The Voyager program is a continuing American scientific program that employs two robotic probes, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, to study the outer Solar System. They were launched in 1977 to take advantage of a favorable alignment of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, and are now exploring the outer boundary of the heliosphere in interstellar space.

Space Shuttle Program

The Space Shuttle was a partially reusable low Earth orbital spacecraft system operated by the NASA. Five complete Shuttle systems were built and used on a total of 135 missions from 1981 to 2011.

Mir was a space station that operated in low Earth orbit from 1986 to 2001, operated by the Soviet Union and later by Russia. Mir was the first modular space station and was assembled in orbit from 1986 to 1996.

Hubble Space Telescope

The Hubble Space Telescope was launched into low Earth orbit in 1990 and remains in operation. Although not the first space telescope, Hubble is one of the largest and most versatile.

International Space Station (ISS)

The International Space Station is the largest human-made body in low Earth orbit, and can often be seen with the naked eye from Earth. ISS components have been launched by Russian rockets, and American Space Shuttles, its first component launched in 1998. The ISS serves as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory in which crew members conduct experiments in biology, human biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology, and other fields.

Mars Rover

A Mars rover is an automated motor vehicle that propels itself across the surface of the planet Mars upon arrival. There have been four successful robotically operated Mars rovers since 1997.

New Horizons

New Horizons is an interplanetary space probe that was launched in 2006 with the primary mission to perform a flyby study of the Pluto system in 2015, and a secondary mission to fly by and study one or more other Kuiper belt objects in the decade to follow.
